Last night's hands-on vermiculture workshop was a hit. Instructor Marian Woodard taught participants about keeping specific species of worms to decompose plant waste at home. The worms' nutrient-rich castings (poop) yield better gardening results, and their tunneling and ingesting behavior creates porous soil for better drainage and aeration. Each participant made their own worm bin "hotel" with 10-gallon bins (generously donated by Bill's Ace Hardware Store and drilled by Marian), damp shredded newspapers, grated organic carrot, and, of course, lots of fresh, wriggly worms!
